The First Bemotrizinol Sunscreen You Can Actually Buy in America Is Here
Back in July I wrote about the FDA finally approving bemotrizinol, the first new sunscreen active ingredient the US had cleared in more than 25 years, and I left one thing open on purpose, when would an actual person be able to walk into a store or click a link and buy something with it in the bottle. That answer has arrived, and it came faster than I expected.

What actually happened between approval and a real bottle on a real shelf
Three separate things had to line up before this filter reached anyone's bathroom cabinet. First, the FDA approval itself, effective August 9, 2026. Second, the ingredient becoming commercially available to formulators as PARSOL Shield, dsm firmenich's trade name for bemotrizinol, also effective August 9. Third, an actual finished product going on sale. That third piece is Ultra Violette's Unblock Screen SPF 50, a zinc and bemotrizinol formula the brand aimed at acne prone, oily, and reactive skin, which launched direct to consumer in late August 2026. Sephora.com and Sephora stores nationwide pick it up in October, and the brand says a second product, Fave Screen, follows in January 2027.
The detail that shapes everything else here is exclusivity. dsm firmenich holds 18 months of US exclusivity on PARSOL Shield, running out to roughly February 2028. Other US formulators cannot simply add bemotrizinol to their own sunscreens during that window, so for the next year and a half, asking whether a US sunscreen contains this filter is asking about one specific brand, not a category.
Why a single filter is worth this much attention
Bemotrizinol is a broad spectrum organic filter that covers UVB and both UVA I and UVA II in one molecule, and it is unusually photostable, meaning it does not break down as quickly in sunlight as several of the older filters already approved in the US. Formulators outside the US, in Europe, Australia, and much of Asia, have been building sunscreens around it for years. American sunscreen has been working with a narrower, older filter set for a quarter century, which is a real part of why some imported sunscreens have felt lighter and performed better than what was available domestically. This approval, and now this actual product, is the first crack in that gap.
Honest caveat
Two of the sources behind the availability claim are the brand and the ingredient supplier's own press releases, and "first and only" is a marketing claim by origin even though it is corroborated by independent trade and consumer press coverage. The exact launch date is also soft, reported as late August by some outlets and August 31 by others, so I am using late August 2026 rather than a firmer date I cannot verify. dsm firmenich's own efficacy and tolerability figures, including a company reported "nearly 500 participants" safety claim, were not independently retrieved here and should not be read as an independent finding, only the FDA approval itself is the defensible safety statement. And it is worth being precise about labels, bemotrizinol is a chemical filter, not a mineral one, so if you specifically want mineral only sun protection, this is not that, even though the Ultra Violette formula does pair it with zinc.
What this means for you
If you want to actually check whether a US sunscreen contains this filter, look at the Drug Facts active ingredients panel for the word bemotrizinol specifically. It will not appear under Tinosorb S, the international name, or PARSOL Shield, the trade name dsm firmenich uses when selling the ingredient to formulators, those names describe the same molecule but will not show up on a US label. Right now Ultra Violette's Unblock Screen SPF 50 is the only confirmed way to buy it in the US, with wider Sephora distribution arriving in October. That will very likely change over the next 18 months as the exclusivity window narrows, and I will keep tracking who else gets access to it.

How do I tell if a US sunscreen actually contains bemotrizinol?
Check the Drug Facts active ingredients panel for the word bemotrizinol specifically. That is the US name. It will not appear as Tinosorb S, which is the international name for the same molecule, or as PARSOL Shield, which is dsm firmenich's trade name for the ingredient it supplies to formulators. Is bemotrizinol a mineral or a chemical sunscreen filter?
