Plant based burgers, sausages, and milks are usually marketed and bought as the clean, careful option, so a headline about fungal toxins turning up in every single one of them sounds alarming before you even finish reading it. Here is the honest version. Researchers bought 212 plant based products off UK shelves and tested them for mycotoxins. Every one came back positive for at least one. And every measured level was below the legal safety limit.

They are naturally occurring compounds that molds produce on grains, legumes and seeds while those crops are growing or being stored, which is why they also turn up in coffee, nuts, and dried fruit. The category that showed up most in this survey was so called emerging mycotoxins, compounds like enniatins, beauvericin, alternariol and its methyl ether, and tentoxin.

Why detected does not mean dangerous

Here is the finding that actually matters, stated plainly: every level measured in this survey was below EU guideline limits. The researchers themselves frame this as a reflection of high UK food industry standards, not a warning sign. As Cranfield's Andrea Patriarca put it, the real concern is what happens when new categories of food enter the market faster than regulation can catch up, since some of the emerging compounds detected here currently have no established regulatory limit attached to them at all. That is a monitoring gap, and it is genuinely worth knowing about. It is not the same thing as an unsafe product sitting on a shelf right now.

The open question the researchers are still working on

The researchers do raise a real, unanswered question, and it is worth stating precisely so it does not get exaggerated. Individual products at these levels are unlikely to pose a problem on their own. What nobody has measured yet is what happens if someone eats a diet built almost entirely around processed plant based foods, every day, for years. That cumulative exposure question is a hypothesis the same research group says it is now actively studying, not a result they have already reported. At high enough doses, general mycotoxin exposure is associated with harms including liver and kidney effects and immune suppression, but that is a statement about mycotoxins broadly, not a finding about the specific levels detected in these 212 products.

Honest caveat

This is not news from the last day or two. A science news outlet resurfaced this study in late August 2026, but the Cranfield University press release describing it is dated May 5, 2026, and the underlying research had already been covered that spring. The study itself is real and peer reviewed, but its timeliness here is manufactured by recirculation, so it is best read as a standing food safety explainer rather than breaking news. Second, every level found was below EU guideline limits, and the lead researcher explicitly says consumers should not be frightened or deterred, so any framing implying these products are contaminated or unsafe misrepresents what the study actually found. Third, this survey covers the UK market at a single point in time and says nothing directly about US shelves. Fourth, the cumulative exposure concern is a hypothesis the research team says it is currently studying, not a completed risk assessment, and the more serious harms associated with mycotoxins generally occur at doses far above anything measured here.
