Vitamin C Does Not Stop You Catching a Cold, but It Does Do One Real Thing
Every autumn I watch the same ritual play out. Someone feels a cold coming on and reaches for a fizzy vitamin C tablet, convinced they read the science on this a long time ago. A new evidence review published August 27, 2026 traces exactly where that belief came from, and it is not where most people think. The real evidence supports something narrower and, I think, more useful than the marketing version.

Where the belief actually started
The vitamin C and colds idea does not come from a broad body of research. It traces back to a 1970 book by two time Nobel laureate Linus Pauling, built on one children's ski camp trial and analyses that were later shown to be mathematically wrong. Pauling won his prizes in chemistry and peace, not nutrition or infectious disease, and the belief he popularized has never fully corrected itself in the 50 years since.
What the real evidence says
On prevention, the answer is no. Across the Cochrane evidence, about 200 milligrams a day did not reduce how many colds people in the general population caught. The one real exception is athletes and military personnel under heavy physical stress, who did catch fewer colds on vitamin C. On severity, there is a small, real effect, but only under specific conditions. A 2023 meta analysis pooled 15 comparisons from 10 double blind, placebo controlled trials, all using 1 gram a day or more, and found vitamin C reduced cold severity by about 15 percent. Translated into something you can actually picture, a 5 day cold becomes about 4.5 days, which works out to roughly 12 hours saved. The catch that almost nobody knows: this only applies if you were already taking vitamin C daily before you got sick. Starting it once symptoms appear does nothing at all.
The dose, and the ceiling
Pauling's original recommendation of 1000 to 2000 milligrams a day sits right at the top of the range considered safe. The US upper limit for adults is 2000 milligrams a day. For comparison, Australia's RDI is just 45 milligrams, about half an orange or a third of a glass of orange juice. Going over 1000 milligrams a day regularly carries real downsides: stomach upset and diarrhea, increased oxalate excretion which raises kidney stone risk, increased iron absorption which matters if you have undiagnosed hemochromatosis, and interactions with radiation therapy, chemotherapy and statins.
Honest caveat
Nearly this entire literature runs through one author, Harri Hemilä, who wrote the Cochrane review, its updates, the 2023 meta analysis, and the published critique of Pauling's original analysis. That does not make the findings wrong, and Cochrane methodology is about as rigorous as the field offers, but a body of evidence that flows through one investigator is not the same as multiple independent lines of evidence. The severity outcome in these trials was measured partly with soft proxies like days confined indoors, which the authors themselves flag as a limitation. The article that prompted this review also miscites its own key source, attaching the 15 percent figure to the wrong DOI. That number comes from the 2023 BMC Public Health meta analysis, not the Cochrane review, and it is worth being precise about which paper actually supports it. Nothing here has been independently replicated by a research group unconnected to Hemilä.
What this means for you
If you already take vitamin C every autumn, the useful change is not whether but when. Taking it daily, before cold season really starts, at a dose at or under 1000 milligrams, is the version the evidence actually supports, and it will shave a real but modest amount off how bad a cold feels if you catch one anyway. Taking it once you already feel sick will not do anything, so save your effort in that moment for rest and fluids instead. If you train hard or are under heavy physical stress on a regular basis, daily vitamin C may also cut how often you get sick in the first place, which is not true for most other people.
